A note on signposting

In many areas of both the Alps and Pyrenees, coloured markers are often used instead of signposts to indicate waymarked paths, with different colours indicating different routes to different objectives. For example, a red and white marker may take you to a lake, while a yellow marker may take you to a summit, or vice versa.

These markers may be small signposts nailed to trees or as part of a larger signpost, or may be purely painted onto a tree or a rock. Nevertheless, they are almost always easy to see and navigate by.

Because of the omnipresence of these signposts and the ease with which they can be navigated by, Undiscovered Walks refers to them frequently when discussing the various route choices during the walks mentioned.
